Thermostat repair and replacement, wired and configured right

A thermostat is only as good as its wiring and settings. We fix communication problems, add missing wires and set up new controls for the equipment they run.

Small device, big influence on comfort

The thermostat tells your heating and cooling equipment when to run, how long to run and, on more advanced systems, how hard to work. When it misreads temperature, loses power, is wired incorrectly or is configured for the wrong type of equipment, the result can look like a failing furnace or air conditioner even when the equipment is fine.

Many service calls for no heat or no cooling end at the thermostat. A dead battery, a tripped condensate safety switch interrupting the control circuit, a loose wire at the equipment, or a thermostat mounted in direct sunlight can all cause trouble. Diagnosing the control circuit before replacing major parts saves time and money.

When replacement is the right move, we match the thermostat to your equipment, make sure it has reliable power and configure it properly, whether that is a simple programmable model or a smart thermostat that learns your schedule.

Signs the problem might be the thermostat

These symptoms often trace back to the control rather than the equipment.

Display is blank or flickering

A blank screen can mean dead batteries, a lost common wire or a blown low-voltage fuse at the furnace or air handler.

Temperature reading seems wrong

A thermostat near a sunny window, a lamp, a supply register or an exterior wall can read far from the actual room temperature.

System short cycles

Frequent on and off cycles can come from incorrect cycle rate settings, poor location or a failing thermostat sensor.

Heat pump uses emergency heat constantly

A thermostat not configured for a heat pump, or with auxiliary heat staged too aggressively, can rely on expensive resistance heat.

Smart thermostat keeps disconnecting

Wi-Fi and power issues, especially without a proper common wire, cause dropouts and erratic behavior.

Settings do not take effect

Schedules that do not run, or holds that will not release, may indicate a faulty unit or a configuration problem.

How thermostat service works

  1. Check the control circuit

We verify low-voltage power at the equipment, test the transformer and fuse, and check safety switches that can interrupt the thermostat signal.

  2. Inspect wiring at both ends

Connections are checked at the thermostat and the equipment control board, and damaged or mislabeled wires are corrected.

  3. Recommend repair or replacement

If the thermostat itself is at fault, we explain options that are compatible with your equipment and provide flat prices.

  4. Install and power properly

The new thermostat is mounted in a suitable location, and a common wire or adapter is added if needed for steady power.

  5. Configure and test

Equipment type, stages, heat pump reversing valve, auxiliary heat lockouts and schedules are set, and each mode is tested.

The C-wire, heat pump settings and good thermostat placement

Most smart thermostats need continuous power, which comes through a common wire, often labeled C, from the equipment's transformer. Older installations frequently lack this wire because older thermostats ran on batteries or drew small amounts of power through other circuits. Without a proper common wire, some smart thermostats cause the system to cycle unexpectedly or lose connection. Solutions include using an unused conductor in the existing cable, running a new cable or installing a manufacturer-approved power adapter.

Heat pumps need specific settings that furnaces do not. The thermostat must know whether the reversing valve is energized in cooling or heating, often through an O or B terminal, and how to stage auxiliary heat. Setting an outdoor temperature lockout for auxiliary heat, where supported, keeps the system from using resistance heat when the heat pump can handle the load. Location matters for every thermostat: an interior wall about five feet above the floor, away from drafts, direct sunlight, supply registers and heat-producing appliances, gives the most accurate reading.

Before calling for no heat or cooling

Check the thermostat mode and setpoint, replace batteries if it uses them, and confirm the breaker and furnace switch are on. If the air handler has a condensate safety switch, standing water in the drain pan may be cutting power to the thermostat.

Getting the thermostat right for your equipment

The thermostat is the control center of the heating and cooling system, and it must match the equipment it controls. A single-stage furnace and air conditioner need a simple thermostat, while two-stage or variable-speed equipment benefits from thermostats that can control stages. Heat pumps require thermostats configured for heat pump operation, including reversing valve control and auxiliary heat.

Wiring is another consideration. Many smart thermostats need a common wire to power the display and Wi-Fi. Older systems may not have one, requiring an adapter or new wire. Incorrect wiring can prevent the system from running or cause equipment to operate improperly.

Location matters as much as the model. A thermostat on an exterior wall, in direct sunlight, near a kitchen or close to a supply register may read temperatures that do not reflect the rest of the home. Relocating the thermostat can improve comfort without changing the equipment.

After installation, configuration is essential. Settings for equipment type, fan operation, cycle rates, auxiliary heat lockouts and temperature limits must be adjusted correctly. Testing each mode confirms that heating, cooling and fan operation respond as expected.

Thermostat mistakes

These errors often cause comfort complaints after a thermostat change.

Choosing a model incompatible with the system

Not all thermostats support heat pumps, multistage equipment or specific wiring configurations.

Skipping configuration

Default settings may not match the equipment, causing short cycling or incorrect auxiliary heat use.

Placing the thermostat in a poor location

Sunlight, drafts and heat sources can distort temperature readings.

Ignoring power requirements

Smart thermostats often require a common wire for reliable operation.

Relying on the thermostat to fix equipment problems

A new thermostat cannot correct airflow, refrigerant or mechanical issues.

What affects the cost of thermostat work

Thermostat model
Basic programmable thermostats cost less than smart, learning or communicating models.
Wiring changes
Adding a common wire, running new cable or correcting damaged wiring adds labor, especially in finished walls.
Equipment complexity
Multi-stage, heat pump, dual fuel and zoned systems require more careful configuration than single-stage furnaces.
Relocation
Moving a thermostat to a better location involves running new wire and patching the old mounting spot.

Thermostat questions

Many homeowners do, but compatibility, missing common wires and heat pump configuration trip up a lot of installations. Incorrect wiring can damage control boards, so professional installation is worth considering for heat pumps and multi-stage systems.

The thermostat may be in a poor location, such as near a sunny window or a heat source, or its sensor may be failing. Relocation or replacement often solves it.

The C-wire provides continuous 24-volt power from the HVAC system to the thermostat. Many smart thermostats need it to operate reliably.

A programmable or smart thermostat can reduce energy use when schedules and setbacks are used consistently. Savings depend on your habits and equipment.

A single thermostat controls one zone. Zoned systems use a thermostat in each zone connected to a zone control panel that operates dampers or zone valves.
